Structure

Hypomanics International (HI)  is a nonprofit foundation, organized to promote better professional and public understanding of the challenges of hypomania and its associated syndromes.  Eventually it will be sponsoring both education and research.  It is a membership organization with a Board elected by a voting membership, and a small administrative staff.

Hypomanics International sponsors and operates

  FAST FORWARD tm

the world community and action organization at hypomanics.com.    FAST FORWARD tm uses the Internet to provide resources and services specifically for the larger membership of those who wish to communicate with,  and contribute to,  the general aims and goals of  Hypomanics International, and its steering committees.

All those using the website can become members of  FAST FORWARD  tm simply by signing up to receive periodic updates and surveys.  Those interested in helping Hypomanics International itself grow, enlarge its capacities, and start the serious process of supporting research in this field are encouraged to become voting members of the nonprofit corporation.  There, they can work with other members to help guide the growth and impact of the institute itself both as a responsive community for its membership ,and as a leader in the encouragement and support of increased research and study into the origins, challenges, and treatments for hypomanic syndromes.

History

The American Institute for Mindfulness, the institution sponsoring  Hypomanics International, was established in 1981.  During next five years, it sponsored classes and lectures by a number of leading authorities.   One early task was to help E.T.  get home, an Eastern Tibetan who needed a Green Card to safely travel to China.  He knew his monastery had been destroyed.

With the protection he needed, the scholarly lama was soon able to rebuild his hereditary seat and open it again.  After his departure, the Institute maintained a focus on the mind sciences. In 1994, it published the groundbreaking crossover theological work Neurotheology: Virtual Religion in the 21st Century, by Laurence McKinney. The work created a new field of theological inquiry as well as a professional reputation for the Institute in the area of popular mind science.

McKinney, a Harvard Business School grad  and his wife, Socorro kept the Institute up to date, sensing there might some day be a future for a fully functioning charity with a history, a tradition, a functioning Board of Directors, and an established membership structure.  In March 2005 The New York Times featured McKinney in a article that brought  the energetic and unusual people known as hypomanics to national attention.   With  hypomanic speed, the Institute was fitted for its new duties.  Dr. John Gartner, author of The Hypomanic Edge and Dr. Adam Stein, a Toronto psychiatrist specializing in the soft bi-polar area, graciously agreed to contribute their wisdom as the newest members of the Board.   The Institute now serves as the official nonprofit sponsoring the growth and providing the guidance of  Hypomanics International. It also assures our friends that any contributions from pro-bono assistance to financial support are fully tax deductible as a charitable contribution to a tax-exempt 501 c. 3  educational foundation.
